Frequently Asked Questions - Ayu Veda Answers

What to expect from an Ayurveda practitioner?

A qualified Ayurveda professional will be same like a doctor, who studies human anatomy to pathology and studies the Ayurvedic way of healing hand in hand. Hence, you can expect a holistic health consultation which may include but not limited to body type assessment, health analysis, disease diagnosis by means of pulse-tongue etc examination and then a prescription and planning of Ayurveda treatments, herbo-mineral formula, specific diet and lifestyle changes.

What to expect in an Ayurvedic spa?

Ayurvedic spas can be a place for basic consultation, understanding body type and other basic concepts and for a relaxing-rejuvenating treatment/program with or without Yoga in it. Usually Ayurvedic spas will have an expert in the field to do a basic consultation and to recommend the best suitable treatment/s.

What kind of medicines are used in Ayurveda?

Ayurveda has a wide variety of medicines which will be prescribed depending upon the patient condition, disease condition and many such other factors. They may be in the form of powder, decoction (something like herbal tea, but more concentrated), syrups, fermented syrups, fresh juice, tablet, capsule, paste, ointment and so on. They will be either plain herbal or herbo-mineral in nature. They can be just a single herb/mineral or a combination of more than one (mostly several) herbs and / or minerals. If prepared as per the classical texts, they are safe to consume and have least or nil side effects. However, they should not be consumed without consulting your doctor or an expert of Ayurveda.

What is Panchakarma?

Pancha means 'five' and karma means 'action/procedure'. So, this is a set of five actions of 'cleansing' the body. They are meant for removing the deep seated unwanted materials, accumulation of which can result in various health problems. It is recommended to undergo Panchakarma periodically every year to prevent seasonal diseases and to improve the health so that body can rejuvenate naturally and one can live longer and healthier life. Apart from that it is one of the major procedure in treating a disease when the condition is deep seated and / or chronic. It also reduces/prevents recurrence of diseases.

Briefly, Panchakarmas are,
1. Vamana- medicated emesis (monitored-induced vomiting)
2. Virechana- medicated purgation (monitored-induced diarrhea)
3. Nasya- medicated oil/liquid instillation to nose
4. Basti- medicated herbal enema
5. Raktamokshana- monitored blood letting
The above list is considered as Panchashodhana (5 cleansing procedures) and Panchakarma can be a little different than them as they do cleansing and rejuvenation as well. These procedures are not meant just to cleanse the organ involved locally (like enema for cleansing the large bowel) but have generalized action on the body at tissues and cellular level.

Why do we have to undergo assessment and consultation?

The primary aim of consultation/ assessment is to understand the individual body type, energy imbalances, preferences, disease conditions, medications and such other factors so that you will get a personalized treatment and advice which is tailored to your unique needs. Along with that it also helps in understanding the concept and to clarify the doubt/s, if any.
